Do you have hair spray, dog drool, heavy traffic, and grease from cooking or just the occasional spills? What makes a difference in cutting through the tough residue? Surfactants—molecules that cause a decrease in water surface tension. Some help as a cleaning agent, some help increase viscosity, some act as fungicides, and some aid in solubilizing oil into water. There are four different types of surfactants, however only two (anionic and nonionic) are used in cleaning products. Some common surfactants used in cleaning products are soaps, sulfonates, polyglucontates, and ethoxylated propylene glycol. These are able to loosen dirt, oil, and help remove them from surfaces and fibers by keeping dirt suspended in the wash solution until rinsed away.

So why is this important to know? All we really want to do is have clean homes.
